The tradition of organized music education in Celje reaches far back into the first half of the nineteenth century, into times of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. In 1888, Celje Music School received a concession issued by the Royal Vice-Regency in Vienna. In 1908, a Slovene music school was established in Celje, as "Glasbena matica" (music society) of Ljubljana opened its branch office in the Celje Community hall, where the school was located until the beginning of the First World War. During the war, Celje Music School did not operate. The school started functioning again in 1919 when it moved into premises on Slomškov trg 10, and where it is located even today.

From 1919 until 1979 Celje Music School operated in only ten teaching rooms and business premises in the old building, and since 1979 the school's activities have also been carried out in the premises of Celje primary schools and elsewhere. In 1983, through fundraising and personal contributions, we built the concert hall and two new extensions to the old building. In recent years, we have also obtained more teaching space by renovating the old garret spaces of neighboring buildings.

Today, Celje Music School is a modern institution where all classical instruments are taught, including pipe organ, harp and singing, also some popular instruments are taught like diatonic accordion and zither. In 2009 we established section for bas guitar and electronic keyboards, in 2010/2011 jazz section is jet to be established.
Around 700 students attend our programmes of individual lessons, pre-school and preparatory music school. In choosing the instrument, we follow our students' interests, and guide students into selecting appropriate orchestral instruments. The results of these endeavors are our successful orchestras, chamber music groups and many outstanding individual performers. Students at junior levels are integrated into small brass and string orchestras; at higher levels, the participants join music groups, of which the core is made up of high school music students (string, brass, symphonic and jazz band). At the primary level we have 55 to 60, full-time and part-time teachers, the majority of them with university degrees, some with specialization and masters degrees. Our school has a modern, computerized and professionally organized library with multimedia information back-up.

Celje Music School has a very important role in the educational and cultural activities of Celje municipality and also in the wider Slovene locality. Our present school principal since 2008 is Simon Mlakar, prof.
